WINDLER: Chik's Pics - Why I Love Minnesota

I'll ask for forgiveness in advance, because I'm about to reveal my inner weather geek. That said, how cool is it to live in a state where you can go from summer to winter in the span of a couple hundered miles? This has been such an exciting week of forecasting and tracking the weather! And it's also a lot of fun to document it all in my daily "Chik's Pics" photos. Come along, read the rest of my blog, and check out my pics and get more on why I love Minnesota and its weather.

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - 2nd Straight Day in the 70s!

It's amazing to think that at the beginning of this week, April temps were running 4 degrees cooler than average. Now, as we close this week with 2 straight 70-degree days, that deficit has been erased. The high made it to 73 on Friday, the warmest since 74 on November 3rd of last year. Since Dave was off today, I got to come in a little later than usual (and of course stay a little later, too, which is why I'm blogging at 9:30 on a Friday night!) The later in-time gave me time to take Austen to the park. Today's "Chik's Pics" destination was Island Lake County Park in Shoreview.
WINDLER: Chik's Pics - First 70 Since November!

Oh, it's great to be back on my regular shift! After working 3 straight mornings for Patrick, I got to "sleep in" this morning! When I did wake up, I ran out to grab the newspaper wearing capri workout pants and a t-shirt. I knew it was going to be a great day when I wasn't even cold at just before 8 in the morning! I had an 11am meeting at the National Weather Service Office in Chanhassen and it was already in the low 60s by then! Then after the meeting, I stopped by nearby Lake Ann Park to take my "Chik's Pics" of the day. It was 66 degrees and rising. I knew...I could just sense...it was about to be our first 70 degree day of the year.
WINDLER: Chik's Pics - Warmest Day of the Year!

One of the perks of filling in on the AM shift when Patrick's on vacation is I get a nice break between the morning Good Morning America news and weather briefs and our Midday show which starts at 11. On a quiet weather day like today, that means the perfect opportunity to go out and grab some fresh "Chik's Pics" for the Midday show. Today, I stopped by Richfield Lake to enjoy the sights and sounds of Spring on what looks to be the warmest day of the year so far!
WINDLER: Chik's Pics - Tough to Beat

I'm on day 3 of filling in for Patrick Hammer and I must say, despite the early hours and the lack of sleep, this has been one terrific stretch of weather! It's tough to beat sunshine and unseasonable warmth! The last couple days, I've been able to share some quality afternoons with my 18-month-old daughter Austen...outdoors, of course. The bonus: I've been taking plenty of "Chik's Pics" along the way! Yesterday's destination: West Lake Park. Check out all my pics in my latest blog.

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - A "Top 10" Spring Day?

I don't know about you, but stepping outside today, I couldn't help but say "Wow!' Blue skies, light winds, & warm temps are all coming together...combining to make a terrific Tuesday. As I'm writing this, we haven't even made it to noon, and the 11am temp is already 56. 56, in case you're keeping track, is the normal high for April 14th! To take advantage of the warmth and get some great "Chik's Pics" to show on the Midday show today, I went to Thompson County Park in West St. Paul. I wasn't disappointed. There were LOTS of people there enjoying the day! Check out all my pics in my latest blog.

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - The Big Six-O

Some people might say reaching the big six-o isn't something to celebrate, but I'm not talking about age...I'm talking about temps! In a season that's been cooler than average with 60-degree temps hard to come by, we're finally taking a turn for the warmer. We came close on Monday afternoon with a high of 58 despite lots of clouds. I spent part of the afternoon with my little girl Austen (she's 18 months old) at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton. That was the site of my latest batch of "Chik's Pics."
This morning, I'm pinch-hitting for Patrick and despite waking up so early, I'm in a great mood.
WINDLER: Chik's Pics - We Came Oh So Close!

All weekend long, I was out with my little girl Austen enjoying the great weather. But as nice as it was, I was also constantly checking the computer to see what our official temperature was. Why? Because we still haven't seen our first 60 degree high this April. We got there 3 times last month, and yesterday, we came oh so close...with a high of 59. So though we missed out on a milestone, it was a glorious Easter weekend nonetheless. Saturday, I took Austen to an outdoor egg hunt, then Sunday, I took her to a park I had never visited before: Lochness Park in Blaine.
WINDLER: Chik's Pics - Break Out the Shorts!

I love it when the afternoon sun brings temps warm enough that the extra layers become optional. I met a few guys that were out throwing a football around, and they figured it was warm enough to break out the shorts!
The hunt for the elusive 50-degree temp is over. After a two-week stint of unseasonably cool temps, we're heading in the right direction now. The high made it to 52 on Wednesday afternoon, marking the first 50+ high since we hit 55 on March 24th. And though 52 sounds pretty good, it's technically still below normal! The normal high for the day is 53 and goes up to 54 on Thursday. Check out my "mild" pics from Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis in my latest blog.

WINDLER: Viewer Pics - The Tale of the Shrinking Snowman

On this first day of spring, there are still plenty of signs of winter. For instance, this morning (technically BEFORE spring began at 6:44am) we got a dusting of snow. The trees are still bare, the grass is still brown. But even before the season switch, some springlike warmth began to take its toll on some winter stalwarts: the snowmen. One of our viewers, David Charles of Anoka, shared his pics of the snowman in his yard. Check them out and hear the "Tale of the Shrinking Snowman" in my latest blog.

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - A warm February

Though January is historically the coldest month of the year here in Minnesota, February ranks 2nd. But this month, it's been anything but! Granted, as I write this blog on Wednesday afternoon, we're watching an Arctic intrusion bring wind and cold and the chance of near-zero temps, but when you look at the month as a whole so far, it's easy to see why our snowpack disappeared last week! Read more and check out my "Chik's Pics" in my blog...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - A Week of weather pics Feb. 9-13

Last weeks weather changed the face of Minnesota...literally! We had temps so warm, for so long, that the snowpack disappeared over the southern half of the state. Even as far north as Duluth, there were puddles! Take a look at my weather pics from last week and pick up some weather tidbits along the way...

WINDLER: Austen goes to the SnowBowl!

Last weekend, I wanted to take advantage of the mild temps and get outside with my 16-month-old daughter Austen. So many choices, so little time! I wanted to take her to the Hot Air Affair in Hudson, WI to catch the Saturday afternoon launch, but it was cancelled do to windy weather. I also considered heading to Plymouth's Fire & Ice Festival. But I settled on the Ham Lake SnowBowl instead. Austen loved every minute of it! Check out my pics from the festival in my latest blog...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - A week of weather pics Feb. 2-6

Last week was a week of temperature swings, that's for sure. We started above the freezing mark, dropped back to sub-zero cold, then made it to 40 by the end of the week! Along the way, I had my handy-dandy camera and stopped to take weather pics through the Twin Cities for on-air and online. Check them out and take a look back at last week's weather in the Metro...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - It's national weather person's day!

There are some holidays you totally forget about until someone reminds you. That would be the case with a little-known holiday that just so happens to be today: National Weather Person's Day! Truth be told, I think it's actually called "National Weatherman's Day" but since it was first conceived, women are now meteorologists too, so "Persons" seems to be the more politically correct version now. Either way, it would have been just another Thursday, if not for a really cute reminder! Read my blog to learn more...

WINDLER: Austen and Mr. Potato Head

My 16-month-old daughter Austen got the surprise of her life over the weekend when she saw a larger-than-life giant Mr. Potato Head! It was one of the many amazing snow sculptures that were part of this year's St. Paul Winter Carnival. We went to the State Fairgrounds to check them out and all Austen could do was say "Mama, more!" It was so much fun to see her wonder and amazement.
WINDLER: Austen has a ball!

Our cold winter took a temporary break on Saturday when we made it to a record-tying 46 degrees! And though I did take my little girl Austen outside to play that afternoon to enjoy the warmth, I also had an indoor back-up plan. Just so happens Austen had an indoor playdate that morning. If you're a parent of small children, you might be looking at ways to get your kids out of the house so they don't go stir crazy. I found just the place: the Chaska Community Center. And let me tell you, Austen had a ball! Check out the pics from her fun in the ball pit in this blog...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - Sub-freezing streak is broken

After a January that was unseasonably cold, to say the least, we finally got our January thaw. It came on the last day of the month on Saturday. And it came in a big way! We warmed way past 32 and didn't stop until we tied a record high! So what does that mean for a sub-freezing streak? It was stopped dead in its tracks at 33 days. Read my blog for pics from the City of Lakes Loppet preps and stats on just how that streak compares to others in Twin Cities history...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics: Where Did All the Snow Go?

Lately, the topic of conversation amongst many Minnesotans has been the cold weather. What hasn't taken center stage (not like it did in December) is snow. It's been a bit of a snow drought, I guess you could say, the last couple weeks. So, what's up? Where did all the snow go? Check out my pics from Como Park on Thursday and read on in my latest blog.

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - How cold has this month been?

As I went out to take my daily "Chik's Pics" on Wednesday, January 28th at Long Lake in New Brighton, I couldn't help but marvel at the fact that a day with highs in the teens (we hit 16 officially) was considered "mild" for this month! Our standards have certainly been lowered in response to not one, but two major Arctic outbreaks this month. You've probably already heard that if we don't make it to 32 degrees on Saturday, that would be the first time in 30 years and only the 4th since 1891 where there was not a January thaw in the Cities. But I decided to dig a little deeper and explore our cold January of 2009 a little more. Check out my findings and my pics of ice fishermen at Long Lake in my latest blog...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics: January thaw?

January has been, for lack of a better word, COLD. Temps this month are running more than 5 degrees below average including 2 major Arctic outbreaks. Though last week looked promising for a thaw, the Twin Cities made no higher than upper 20s on Wednesday and Thursday. But this weekend, there's another chance. Right down to the wire, it looks like we *could* reach 32 on Saturday! How unusual is a January thaw anyway? Check the stats and check out my "Chik's Pics" from the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in my blog...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - A week of weather pics

Do you ever get behind on something and feel like there's no way you'll ever catch up? That's the way I've been feeling as of late as my once daily "Chik's Pics" blogs have slowly turned into occasional and/or when I have a few extra minutes blogs. I knew it would be a big task to try to get back up-to-date, so I decided to condense a week's worth of blogging and photos into this one MEGA-blog! Like that terminology? So if you've been under a rock the last week and missed out on all the exciting Minnesota weather, here's your chance to see what you missed and pick up a few weather tidbits/factoids/did ya know's along the way...

WINDLER: Chik's Pics - Pond hockey from 2 points of view

The weekend's Arctic outbreak was oddly reminiscent of a year ago...because both coincided with the US Pond Hockey Championships at Lake Nokomis. I went and took some weather pics of the play on Friday (when it was 12 above!). Then on Saturday, my friend and coworker Tim Burns, a producer at the station, braved the even colder weather and watched the tournament. Check out my pics and Tim's in my latest blog...

WINDLER: Austen watches the inauguration

Did you watch some of the inauguration coverage today? I did. In fact, I wish I could have watched all of it (but there was some weather forecasting to be done, so I couldn't). But I did get the chance to spend some time this morning watching the events leading up to President Obama's swearing in ceremony. And I felt it was really important for my daughter Austen to see the images too. We watched as history was made. Check out my blog for pics and more...
