Democratic Eighth District Congressman Rick Nolan has announced on his Facebook page that he will seek re-election to Congress in 2018 and will not mount a bid for governor.

"The challenges and consequences of the issues facing our Nation in Washington are too important for me to walk away at this time," the Facebook post read.

Nolan won re-election in 2014 and 2016. He said he received encouragement to mount a bid for the governor's chair, but that he also heard from supporters who wanted him to remain in Congress.

"America is at a tipping point, and I feel compelled to devote all of my energy and experience to moving our Nation forward – and to stopping powerful elements determined to roll back a century of American progress that has doubled life expectancy and created the greatest middle class the world has ever known," the post continued

"These destructive forces cannot be allowed to succeed.
