The restoration of the Minnesota State Capitol is one of the most extensive, and expensive, renovation projects in state history. The four-year, $310 million project painstakingly restored the Capitol, which opened in 1905, back to its original splendor. Some of the major projects included renovating and creating usable space in the Capitol basement, restoring nearly $1 billion in fine art and murals, repairing and restoring the Capitol's marble exterior features and adding new practical features, including more restrooms, classroom space, a new visitors center and more accessibility in public meeting and hearing rooms.
5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has covered multiple aspects of the State Capitol Restoration Project since it launched in the fall of 2013. On this special edition of At Issue, we'll revisit some of our favorite stories detailing this massive project and meet the people responsible for restoring the Capitol back to its original splendor. We also talk with the author of the new book Our Minnesota State Capitol: From Groundbreaking Through Restoration.
Three days of events are planned from August 11-13 to celebrate the State Capitol's grand re-opening. You can find a full list of events on the Department of Administration's Capitol Grand Re-opening page.
