State Budget Surplus Grows to $1.65 Billion; Dayton Urges Caution, Restraint

Minnesota lawmakers will have a larger surplus to work with as they put together a two-year state budget during the rest of the session. The Minnesota Management and Budget Office says the surplus has grown from $1.4 billion in November to $1.65 billion.

Republican lawmakers are already proposing giving much of that surplus back to taxpayers. But Gov. Mark Dayton is urging restraint in spending all of the surplus too soon. Dayton says there are too many economic uncertainties, such as what Congress will do with the Affordable Care Act, to spend all of the surplus this year.

Sunday Liquor Sales Heads to Governor Dayton's Desk

A bill allowing liquor stores to open on Sundays in Minnesota is now officially on Governor Dayton's desk. After passing the Senate by a 10-vote margin on Monday, the House voted to concur with the Senate's version of the bill. The only difference between the two bills was how early stores could open on Sundays; 11 a.m. in the Senate version versus 10 a.m. in the House version.

Dayton now has the option of signing in the bill or allowing it to become law without his signature, which could happen this week. Sunday sales would become legal in Minnesota in July.
