House, Senate Vote on Several Budget Bills Before End of March

There has been a flurry of activity at the State Capitol this week as budget negotiations kick into high gear. The House and Senate have already taken votes on a number of omnibus budget bills, including ones dealing with taxes, transportation, education, environment, agriculture and public safety.

Many of these bills will eventually head to conference committees before they're voted on again and sent to Governor Mark Dayton. Lawmakers must finalize all budget bills before the end of the Legislative session on May 22.

Rep. Tim Walz Enters 2018 Race for Governor

Democratic Congressman Tim Walz officially kicked off his campaign for governor this week. Walz, accompanied by his wife and daughter, visited the State Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board offices on Monday to file the paperwork necessary to launch his campaign. Walz is from the Mankato area and says he will focus on policies that work for the whole state, not just one area over another. Walz also believes his experience in Congress and ability to work across the aisle will be a big benefit to his campaign.

Walz joins three other Democrats already in the race - Chris Coleman, current St. Paul mayor, State Rep. Erin Murphy and State Auditor Rebecca Otto. Christopher Chamberlin is the lone Republican to enter the race, so far. Many more candidates are expected to jump into the Governor's race in the coming months.
