2018 Governor's Race: A List of Candidates

With Democratic Governor Mark Dayton not planning to run for a third term, many candidates have stepped forward in an effort to fill the position.

Here's a look at the candidates who have entered the gubernatorial race so far:



A Woodbury native, Bey is listed as being self-employed, according to votesmart.org. He previously entered the 2014 congressional race as a candidate.

A Republican candidate and Minnesota native, Chamberlin is working on a certificate in American Government and Politics at Harvard University

The seven-term lawmaker from Dellwood announced his bid in April. Dean's name has been intertwined with health care for years, and he says that will be his campaign's central issue.

The former state representative recently left the state GOP party's leadership team after serving two terms as its chairman.

The Hennepin County Commissioner lost to Gov. Mark Dayton by roughly 5 percentage points in 2014. Johnson won a seat on the Hennepin County Commission in 2008 after serving three terms in the state House.

Currently serving his second term in the state Senate, Osmek graduated from St. Cloud State University, works as a project manager for United Health Group, and lives with his wife, Kari, and two daughters in Mound.

A Blue Earth native, Parrish taught in the state's public school system. He was also an Intelligence Specialist with the U.S. Navy Reserve and also served as a lieutenant commander.

A current Redwood Falls resident, Wharton has entered the race in an effort to "fight the good fight and protect the state of MN," according to his campaign Facebook page.

The Democratic St. Paul mayor announced in January that he would not be seeking a fourth term as mayor and would instead pursue a run for governor.

State Representative Liebling's committee assignments have been heavy in health and human services, taxes, civil law, public safety, and ways and means. Her campaign centers on increasing the minimum wage, public education, and health insurance.

State Representative Murphy is a six-term Democrat from St. Paul who served as House Majority Leader in 2013 and 2014. She says health care and education are at the heart of her campaign for governor.

The 53-year-old three-term auditor also served in the House of Representatives and on the Forest Lake Area School Board.

Thissen became speaker in 2013 when the DFL had a lock on state government with the Legislature and Dayton in control.

U.S. Representative Walz is the top Democrat on the Veterans Affairs Committee. He first won the election to his rural district along Minnesota's southern border in 2006. He has held several re-election campaigns, including in 2016.
