A single zebra mussel made a home of a boat cover at the bottom of Lake Harriet before being lifted out and recorded as the first of its invasive species on the Minneapolis lake.

The state Department of Natural Resources said Thursday that no other zebra mussels were found after teams of divers, snorkelers and waders spent 67 hours searching.

Despite the apparent non-proliferation, Lake Harriet has now been added to the Infested Waters List for zebra mussels. The agency says the lake could be removed from the list if future surveys recover no zebra mussels.

The Minneapolis Park Board says the discovery and subsequent listing on the infested list does not affect public use of the lake.

Lakes Nokomis and Hiawatha were added to the Infested Waters List for zebra mussels in 2010, as was Minneahaha Creek. The zebra mussel has not been detected in nearby Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles or Cedar Lake, though the lakes are all on the list for Eurasian milfoil.

Meanwhile, the DNR says five zebra mussels were discovered in Lake Marion in Dakota County as part of a city-sponsored program aimed at early detection. The agency says the city can now apply for a pilot project treatment following a more-thorough search of the lake.

The DNR says that of the state's 11,842 lakes, fewer than 250 have been found to have zebra mussels.
