A Ramsey County judge has denied a request to move the trial for the St. Anthony police officer charged in the shooting death of Philando Castile.

Defense attorneys for Jeronimo Yanez on Tuesday requested the change of venue, arguing the court could not seat an unbiased jury due to the high-profile nature of the case.

Yanez is charged with second-degree manslaughter and two other felonies in the death of Castile, who was shot several times during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights in July. 

Defense motions also denied Thursday by Ramsey County Judge William H. Leary III:

  • The dismissal of manslaughter count
  • The severance of a second-degree manslaughter charge from two other charges relating to the intentional discharge of a firearm.
  • The exlusion of certain opinions of a police conduct expert

A motion to suppress a statement the officer gave to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was stricken by Leary at the request of Yanez' attorneys.
