Defense attorneys for Jeronimo Yanez on Tuesday requested the change of venue, arguing the court could not seat an unbiased jury due to the high-profile nature of the case.

Yanez is charged with second-degree manslaughter and two other felonies in the death of Castile, who was shot several times during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights in July.

Defense motions also denied Thursday by Ramsey County Judge William H. Leary III:

  • The dismissal of manslaughter count
  • The severance of a second-degree manslaughter charge from two other charges relating to the intentional discharge of a firearm.
  • The exlusion of certain opinions of a police conduct expert

A motion to suppress a statement the officer gave to the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension was stricken by Leary at the request of Yanez' attorneys.
