Tricky Commute Involves Slick Roads Across Minnesota, More Expected Tuesday

As if it isn't challenging enough to head back to work some weeks, Monday drivers were met with a mess.

In Richfield, snow covered roads made for slick conditions, and led to a jackknifed semitrailer at Highway 62 and Interstate 35W.

"We've had quite a mixture of weather types," said Kevin Gutknecht, the Minnesota Department of Transportation's director of communications.

MnDOT has plows out throughout the state. In the metro, Gutknecht says the salt should do the trick on what had fallen so far by the afternoon commute Monday.

"The temperatures are such that salt, the main chemical we use to combat ice, and the freezing drizzle that is freezing on the roads, will work pretty well," he adds.

In Duluth and along the North Shore, folks have received more than a foot of snow in some areas.

"We've got crews out up there clearing snow, clearing roads, making sure things are as clear as can be up there," Gutknecht said.

To the south, Rochester streets are coated in ice. This video taken by meteorologist Chris Kuball at KSTP's sister station, ABC 6 News, shows how slick some of the side streets still were Monday afternoon.

Fortunately, the Presidents' Day holiday means there's less traffic on the roads, but snow with the potential for freezing rain will likely ramp up again overnight Monday into Tuesday.

"We'll have crews on all night and all day tomorrow if we need to," Gutknecht said.
