A White Bear Lake man who pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter for stabbing a family friend in the back during a fight last August was sentenced Monday.

Twenty-two-year-old Joseph Derks was sentenced Monday to nine years in prison for the death of 47-year-old Robert Olson. He gets credit for 60 days already served.

The stabbing happened Aug. 6, 2015, at the corner of Grand Avenue and Crown Hill Court in White Bear Lake.

According to the criminal complaint, Olson, who was friends with Derks’ father, refused to leave the home on Crown Hill Court and started choking Derks' younger brother.

Derks told police he stabbed Olson “a lot” in the back with a hunting knife and accidentally stabbed his brother in the leg during the altercation. Derks' younger brother was rushed to the hospital with a severe wound.

Olson died face-down on the basement floor, according to authorities, and was stabbed in the neck, head and back.

Records show police had been to the home nearly 50 times over the last five years.
