The analysis took into account a number of factors and came up with a point-based system. Those factors included:

  • Lowest share of adult depression
  • Highest adequate-sleep rate (Minnesota was No. 3 overall)
  • Highest political participation
  • Lowest suicide rate
  • Fewest work hours
  • Lowest long-term unemployment rate
  • Highest volunteer rate (Minnesota was No. 3, with Wisconsin at No.4)
  • Lowest divorce rate (Minnesota ranks No. 4)
  • Safest state (Minnesota is No. 4)

The nation's unhappiest state? West Virginia.

How do the border states shape up?

  • South Dakota: No. 6
  • Iowa: No. 8
  • Wisconsin: No. 9
  • North Dakota: No. 14

This isn't the first time Minnesota has earned accolades from WalletHub. Minnesota was named the second-best state for working fathers and working mothers

It even honored Minnesota with several top listings on its 2017 Best Beach Towns to Live in. Eden Prairie was ranked third in the nation in that analysis.
