The list of the first 19 artists who will take part in the Minnesota Sound concert series, which will take place on the Nicollet Mall in the days leading up to Super Bowl LII at U.S. Bank Stadium on Feb. 4, were announced at a press conference Friday morning.
The 10-day concert series, being overseen by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, is part of Super Bowl LIVE, which will open daily on the Nicollet Mall, beginning on Jan. 26 and running through the day of the game. The event is free and open to the public and will span six blocks from South 12th Street to South 6th Street.
"I always say we love excuses to come back and I can't think of a better excuse to come back than to put music on a stage in downtown Minneapolis" Jimmy Jam said.
Jam and Lewis both grew up in Minneapolis.
"We really wanted to make this inclusive, particularly of the local community, and make sure we shine the spotlight on the wonderful music scene and really the art scene in Minneapolis and Minnesota."
According to the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee website, the list of expected performers includes Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa in Disney's Frozen, Bob Mould, Cobi, Dessa, Esera Tualo, the Jayhawks, the Jets, Morris Day and the Time, Mint Condition, the New Power Generation, New Power Soul, the Revolution, Sheila E., Soul Asylum, the Sounds of Blackness, the Steeles, Stokley Williams, the Suburbs and Vocal Essence.
Menzel will open the series on Jan. 26 by performing "Let it Go," the hit song from Frozen.
A release said daily lineups will be organized largely by genre.
Prince's old band The Revolution, Sheila E. and Morris Day and the Time will perform as part of "Prince Night," a tribute to the late Minnesota music icon, on Jan. 29. Prince's later band the New Power Generation is also slated to perform at another date.
Sheila E. said she doesn't want music fans to be worried if the weather is cold and snowy.
"We are strong warriors," she said. "We're ready to go. We're super heroes. We are ready to kick butt. I think that everyone is (going to) have a good time.
"Just bundle up, come outside and enjoy some music and then hang out during Super Bowl in Minneapolis and have a fantastic week."
