An Oakdale man is accused of strangling a woman while they were having sex.

Brooklyn Park police were called to a home at 3 a.m. Wednesday on a report of an unconscious woman. They arrived to find a woman who was not breathing and had no pulse. They say she had injuries around her throat and on her arms.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m., according to the criminal complaint.

She was identified as 36-year-old Krista Ambers. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner determined she died from strangulation.

The caller was identified as 37-year-old Toby Nicholas Clarke of Oakdale, who said he had been in an intimate relationship with the woman for the past three years. He said he put his hands around the victim’s neck while having "rough sex," according to the complaint.

Friends and family told police that the woman was in an abusive relationship with Clarke and that they had seen bruises on her neck multiple times.

Clarke was previously convicted of felony kidnapping in May 2001, a fourth-degree controlled substance crime in November 2013 and providing false information and a false name to police in March 2006.

Clarke has been charged with second-degree murder. If convicted, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
