The Plymouth Fire Department has determined a recalled Pontiac Grand Prix sparked the fire that burned through an apartment complex last week.
The department, working with the Hennepin County Fire Investigation Team, looked into the cause of the fire May 11, at the Parkers Lake Apartments.
Investigators traced the origin of the fire to the left stall of a four-car garage attached to the building.
A 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP was parked inside the stall.
By using the sedan's vehicle identification number, investigators confirmed with a Pontiac dealership that the vehicle was part of a GM recall for engine compartment fires.
The car maker announced two separate recalls in March 2008 and April 2009. Both involved a fire danger risk in the Grand Prix, model years 1997 through 2003.
The official cause of the fire is the failure of equipment in the vehicle. The fire department said insurance companies are responsible for determining the exact failure.
The fire destroyed four units and caused an estimated $3 million damage.
