Elko New Market will reinstate its police department effective Friday after a tense and packed city council meeting Thursday night.

Close to a hundred people protested outside Eagle View Elementary before the meeting, urging the city council to bring back the police department. The council voted 3 to 2 earlier this month, to remove the city's officer from patrol effective April 9.

Council members said there had been some discussion about contracting with Scott County Sheriff's Department, but no contract had been reached.

Days after the vote, vandals wrote, 'This is what no cops looks like' at a local park.

More than 150 people attended Thursday's meeting, which had been moved to the school to accomodate the large crowd.

After hearing from many concerned citizens, city council members voted unanimously to reinstate the police department effective April 24.
