Inmate says he tried to have wife killed
Larry Gullickson has been in and out of prison most of his adult life. In fact, he and his wife, Bev, got married while he was serving time at the federal security hospital in Rochester. She says she always thought she could help him. Now she's afraid he'll try to kill her.
We didn't know what to expect when we met Larry Gullickson inside the maximum security prison at Oak Park Heights. He was surprisingly blunt. "I was talkin' to this guy about killin' my wife."
Gullickson told us he was mad at his wife because she testified against him and that she lost their house and all his belongings to foreclosure. "What I did was just talk to this one guy and then he said he knew somebody."
That "somebody" turned out to be a BCA agent. For three months, the agent posed as a hit-man. Recorded conversations show Gullickson agreed to pay $25,000.
He said he wanted it to look like an accident, adding that there were cliffs and lakes near Bev Gullickson's home. "Mainly he wanted to know about the money, the payoff part," recalls Gullickson of the conversations.
Gullickson kept promising he'd get the money, but never came through.
Last July, a friend told Gullickson the BCA was investigating. The sting was over and the county attorney said there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute Gullickson.
Agents warned Bev what her husband was up to. "And I'm frightened," she said.
As her husband's scheduled release date approaches, the fear builds. She's taken out a restraining order and asked the local sheriff's department to keep a close eye. "I fear for my life because if he can do that in prison, what is he gonna do to me when he gets out?"
When asked if his wife should be afraid of him, Larry Gullickson said, "Not now. 'Cause I'm not going to do anything."
When agents interrogated Gullickson, he would only say he wanted to hurt his wife. He told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS he tried to have her killed. "I wasn't tryin' that hard. 'Cause otherwise it would have been done. You know what I mean?"
Larry Gullickson told us he now plans to sue his wife for the money he believes she cost him. He says that will satisfy his desire for revenge.
Gullickson is scheduled to be released June 13th.
