A young man remains in critical condition Wednesday after a hit and run earlier this week.

Police say 23-year-old Luis Cruz-Guzman was trying to cross the street when he was hit just after bar close Monday morning. It happened on East Lake Street near 27th Avenue South.

Off-duty police officer Derek Chauvin caught the man behind the wheel after witnessing the hit and run.

“I'm very proud of him and what he did and his quick reaction to the situation,” said Assistant Police Chief Matt Clark.

“He was able to get into one of our marked squads ... he chased about five blocks the vehicle pulled over ... He was able to stop the driver,” Clark said.

Police arrested 26-year-old Kaleb Conway for DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Luis Cruz-Guzman was critically hurt and rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center. He suffered head injuries in the crash. His family declined to speak with us about the accident.

Officer Chauvin had a marked squad car even though he was working off-duty, which was key in solving the case.

“If we have officers working off duty, and we have extra vehicles that aren't being used by on duty, we will allow officers to use those vehicles. This is a circumstance where it really paid off,” Clark said.

Conway has several alcohol-related convictions for driving offenses, according to court records.

Charges are expected to be filed Thursday.
