Officials have identified the 42-year-old woman who was hit and killed by a Green Line light rail train Sunday morning near Westgate Station on the border of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

Shana Buchanan of Minneapolis died in front of 3430 University Ave. SE just before 10:30 a.m. after she was hit by a train, according to records from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner released Tuesday. The manner of death is pending.

A Metro Transit official says it appears Buchanan was trying to cross in front of the eastbound train when she was hit. She was dead when emergency responders arrived.

She may have been wearing headphones and didn't see or hear the train approaching, officials say.

Westgate Station is on University Avenue near Berry Street where the city lines of St. Paul and Minneapolis meet.

Metro Transit police and the medical examiner are continuing to investigate.
