A woman was hit and killed by a Green Line light rail train Sunday morning near Westgate Station in St. Paul.

A Metro Transit official says it appears the woman was trying to cross in front of the eastbound train shortly after 10 a.m. when she was hit. The woman was dead when emergency responders arrived.

According to a preliminary investigation, the woman appeared to have been crossing at the crosswalk, and the warning signals appeared to be operating properly. She may have been wearing headphones and didn't see or hear the train approaching, officials say.

The woman's name hasn't been released, but authorities say she was in her 40s.

Westgate Station is on University Avenue near Berry Street.

Buses replaced train service between Prospect Park and Raymond Station during the investigation, but normal operations have since resumed.
