St. Paul Police have identified the two officers involved in a shooting Thursday morning that left the suspect dead.

Authorities say Officer Mark Grundhauser and Officer Joseph Sandquist responded to the call around 7 a.m. outside of a Holiday gas station near Wabasha Street and Plato Boulevard. Witnesses told 911 dispatchers a man was throwing large rocks through car windows and swinging a pipe.

When the officers approached the man, they say he was “physically and aggressively” interacting with the them. St. Paul Police Chief Tom Smith says the officers believed their lives were in jeopardy and shot and killed the suspect.

The officers are on administrative leave during the investigation.

The suspect has not been identified at this time. Police say they are working with the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office to identify the man.
