It’s the final weekend to check out the Minnesota State Fair! Friday is Day 9, meaning there are only a few days left to enjoy your favorite fair foods and exhibits.

4-H Awards

The 4-H Youth Awards will be presented Friday at the fair. Gov. Mark Dayton will join the DNR commissioner to present awards to a Future Farmers of America student and a 4-H member who demonstrated skills in natural and agricultural resources.

The 4-H Awards take place at 11 a.m. Friday at the DNR Volunteer Outdoor Stage.

University of Minnesota Health Care is sponsoring LVAD Day at the Minnesota State Fair. A reunion will be held for dozens of patients with Left-Ventricular Assist Devices, which is an implanted device for heart failure.

Fair attendees can see and touch real hearts at the University of Minnesota building exhibit. Experts will also be available to talk about signs of heart failure and what to do if you or someone near you is suffering from symptoms.

Meet a Fort Hood Shooting Survivor

Starting Friday, you can meet a Minnesotan who is a survivor in every sense of the word.

U.S. Army Sergeant Patrick Zeigler was shot four times, including once in the head, during the shootings at Fort Hood in 2009.

He spent 800 days in the hospital recovering but now lives independently with his family in Rochester, Minnesota.

Sergeant Zeigler will share his experiences Friday through Labor Day at the Mayo Clinic Mobile Museum. It's part of the clinic's 150th anniversary.

Getting to the Fair

New this year, the renovated Gate 16 is serving as a grand entrance to the fairgrounds. A projected one-third of the crowd is expected to enter and exit through that gate, which is also right next to the new transit hub.

The transit hub will be the designated drop-off and pick-up zone for anyone taking Metro Transit or the park-and-ride system.

"The idea of this is to relieve bottleneck," Minnesota State Fair General Manager Jerry Hammer said.

Hammer hopes the renovations and the addition of the Green Line light rail will ease congestion along Como Avenue on the south side of the fairgrounds. In the past, buses shared that space with cars, pedestrians and livestock trailers.

Hammer expects the horseshoe-shaped transit hub to reduce the number of buses turning across busy intersections and crosswalks.

KSTP at the Fair

You can find KSTP near the corner of Chambers Street and Carnes Avenue, just south of the Grandstand. We’ll be on air throughout the fair.

The Minnesota State Fair runs through Labor Day, the tickets can be purchased at the fairgrounds.
