The name Islam simply means "Self-surrender to the will of God." A Muslim, is a follower of this faith. Nearly one in every five people alive today is a Muslim.
Sadik Warfa a Somali community leader sat down with KSTP and ran us through the basics of Islam. He says the world has been given an inaccurate impression about Islam.
"It's a religion of peace, it's a religion of harmony, it's a religion of peaceful coexistence," he said.
Warfa says God's name in Islam is "Allah" and his prophet is named "Mohammad." He is considered Allah's last messenger. Muslims follow the Quran. The book is essentially their bible. Islam requires its followers to pray five times a day facing east towards Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. It is home to Islam's holiest site.
So how many Muslims are here in the state of Minnesota? The numbers are close to 200,000," he said.
That means Muslims make up four percent of Minnesota's population.
Other Important things to know: an Imam leads the prayer.
Women where veils,” to cover their hair because it's religion," Warfa said.
"Ramadan is the month of fasting not only from food and drink but bad behavior," he said.
He says he hopes mainstream Minnesota understands that Muslims want education for their kids and a peaceful life.
Warf says the reports you hear through the media about Islamic extremist are but a small percentage of people misrepresenting a peaceful religion.
