There are some new benches near an Andover Elementary School playground. Those benches are for more than just sitting.
They’re called “Buddy Benches.” They were installed at all elementary schools in the Anoka-Hennepin District this summer. A social worker at Andover Elementary School says the benches will eventually be designed to help kids be more inclusive if there’s someone at recess all by themselves.
“You’re sitting back and you know you have a chance to advocate for yourself,” said Anoka-Hennepin School District Social Worker Stephanie Ochocki. “You could be out at recess and not be connected and be like, ‘I don’t know what to do. I’m not sure how to get into that game, or how to join in and play.’ But we’re laying it out for kids that this is a way you can do it.”
The Anoka-Hennepin Educational Foundation paid $13,000 to install the benches.
