A man who was illegally walking between rail tracks was hit by a Metro Transit Green Line train in St. Paul on Monday afternoon and taken to the hospital, according to transit officials.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of University Avenue and Chatsworth Street.

The man was hit by the westbound train while illegally walking in a non-designated crosswalk area at the intersection, according to Metro Transit spokesman Drew Kerr.

The pedestrian was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with non-life-threatening injuries. He has not been identified.

The train was held up for an hour until the scene was cleared, officials say. The Snelling Avenue and Rice Street stops were also delayed and riders took busses.

Service resumed around 2 p.m.

Metro Transit police are investigating.
