More than a million people are expected to turn out for the Great Minnesota Get Together, but will they have time to try the hundreds of dishes Minnesota's fair offers?

Food

Sunday marks Minnesota Cooks Day at the fair. Chefs from around the state will cook, bake and present unique dishes with local farmers and foodies.

The show lasts until 5 p.m. in Carousel Park.

A food competition took place at 11 a.m. on the Creative Activities Demonstration State. Judges ranked foods inspired by baseball parks, football stadiums and the state fair that wee made by amateurs.

There are also more than 450 food options available at the fair's 300 concession stands, including deep-fried candy bars, spaghetti and meatballs on a stick and walleye mac n' cheese.

Entertainment

If you haven't made it out yet, there's a lot to see and do at the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday, including live music in the Leinie Lodge Bandshell.

There are also two shows to check out in the Northwoods section. At 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. the Extreme Canines dog show takes center stage. At noon, 3 p.m. , 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., you can see the Timberworks lumberjack show.

More than 100 acts will perform for free throughout the 12 days of the fair. For a schedule of events, look here.

Weather Forecast

Sunday will be a hazy day in the Twin Cities, with a chance for thunderstorms, according to KSTP Meteorologist Jonathan Yuhas. These could come at anytime, but especially between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The day will be sticky, with highs in the upper 80s and dew point temperatures in the low 70s. These are producing heat index values in the low to mid 90s, Jonathan says.

Getting to the Fair

New this year, the renovated Gate 16 will serve as a grand entrance to the fairgrounds. A projected one-third of the crowd is expected to enter and exit through that gate, which is also right next to the new transit hub.

The transit hub will be the designated drop-off and pick-up zone for anyone taking Metro Transit or the park-and-ride system.

"The idea of this is to relieve bottleneck," Minnesota State Fair General Manager Jerry Hammer said.

Hammer hopes the renovations and the addition of the Green Line light rail will ease congestion along Como Avenue on the south side of the fairgrounds. In the past, buses shared that space with cars, pedestrians and livestock trailers.

Hammer expects the horseshoe-shaped transit hub to reduce the number of buses turning across busy intersections and crosswalks.
