Some families budget, plan and prepare for the Minnesota State Fair for weeks.

Friday marked the Frederikson family's 18th visit to the fair. The family of 5 had been planning their visit since the fair ended last year.

To celebrate the tradition, they planned to spend 18 hours on the fairgrounds, starting at 6 a.m. and lasting until midnight.

"Last year we only stayed 17 hours," Jeff Frederikson said.

With $700 in hand, they started checking off the kids' list of things to do; Funnel cakes and crepes were first on the list, the Midway was last.

KSTP found, on average, families are planning to spend about $60 per person on tickets, parking, food and entertainment at the fair.

The Frederiksen's not only save their money throughout the year for this tradition, they were also trying to save their energy for their full day at the fair.

"We're all over the place," said Frederiksen. "And the funny thing about it is we don't really hit the entire state fair! It's almost impossible to do even though you're here that long."

If you're wanting to save some cash, there are still plenty of activities you can enjoy without paying an extra fee, including the Eco Experience, animal barns and 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS live shows.
