A former Minneapolis social studies teacher is scheduled to be sentenced Friday in Ramsey County Court for soliciting sex with a child through electronic communication.
Joel Fowler, who taught at Olson Middle School, pleaded guilty to one count of “Engaging in Electronic Communication Relating or Describing Sexual Conduct with Child” in June.
Authorities say Fowler posted a Craigslist ad in May trying to solicit sex with girls who were younger than him.
An undercover sergeant responded to the ad posing as a 14-year-old girl, and Fowler agreed to meet up in a St. Paul park to have sex, according to the criminal complaint.
Agents arrested him when he showed up near Cherokee Heights Park in St. Paul.
Fowler’s case is part of an initiative with the Minnesota Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force called Operation Broken Heart. The task force is working with law enforcement agencies throughout the state to investigate and prosecute criminals who exploit children on the Internet.
