What a day to be a Minnesota sports fan.

The Minnesota Vikings, Twins and Lynx all played Saturday in Minneapolis, which is great news for thousands of fans. The only potential problem: All of those fans had to get to the games.

Many took the light rail.

"It's a little packed there," said Dan Vang, "but it's nice because you have the ambiance of having fans go with you too."

Metro Transit expected more than 11,000 riders Saturday. To handle the crowds, it has all of its trains - more than 80 of them - on the tracks. Also, for the first time at a Vikings game, it sold single round trip light rail tickets online, and it encouraged riders at the Vikings game to buy their return tickets early.

"If you need train tickets for the ride home, buy them now, save time after the game," shouted one worker outside of the game as people walked off the light rail.

We wanted to see how it all worked out. So we hopped on the Green Line at Target Field, and at 5:22 p.m., we rode the seven stops to Stadium Village in 18 minutes.

"Very pleased," Wayne Viessman said of his light rail ride, "and I'm a country boy. I'm from South Dakota."

Metro Transit also added busses to Saturday's schedule, and they kept the extra light rail trains running even after the Vikings game Saturday night.
