The recent funeral of a fallen Mendota Heights police officer has spurred repairs to a memorial remembering a Maplewood police officer.

A St. Paul Pioneer Press report says a vandal used white paint last year to vandalize a memorial for Sgt. Joseph Bergeron. A 30-ton granite boulder was placed near where the Maplewood officer was shot while responding to a carjacking.

Workers power-washed the memorial, but that left the memorial inscription barely readable.

Retired St. Paul police officer Tim Bradley says officials had talked for a while about repairing the memorial, but last week's funeral for police Officer Scott Patrick provided the impetus to act.

Bradley and the wife of a Ramsey County sheriff's spent three hours painstakingly repainting the letters. He says the effort is about restoring the community's memorial to sacred ground.
