A Duluth man is in critical condition after he was shot by a police officer early Monday morning.

KSTP sister station WDIO reports the shooting happened around 4 a.m. in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood. Officers were responding to a report of a domestic disturbance. A woman said her 34-year-old husband had cut himself with a knife and was bleeding.

When police arrived, the man had locked himself in a basement room. After officers heard the man say he wanted to die, they forced the door open and sent a K-9 in. Police told the man to drop the knife. When he refused, an officer opened fire, shooting the man.

He is in critical condition at a Duluth hospital. The officer who fired the shot is on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation.
