A 17-year-old man was killed in a rollover crash Wednesday night in Dakota County.

The crash happened around 9:42 p.m. on Highway 52 near 180th Street, just north of Vermillion, Minnesota.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee was heading northbound on Highway 52 when the driver, 17-year-old Matthew Berger of Burnsville, lost control. The vehicle went into the median and rolled over, coming to a rest in the southbound lanes.

The crash killed 17-year-old Ty Alyea of Burnsville, who was a passenger.

Alyea was a star shortstop on the Burnsville High School varsity baseball team. His coach is having a hard time coping with the loss of one of his players. He coached Alyea from little league to varsity.

"The very first thing I did was pray," said Head Coach Mick Scholl while holding back tears.

Scholl says Alyea was a great athlete and leader. Friends say he was the kind of guy everyone liked.

Eighteen-year-old Cole Borchardt was critically injured, and remains in critical condition. He and Alyea were not wearing seatbelts, according to Minnesota State Patrol, and both were ejected from the vehicle.

Seventeen-year-old Tylan Procko had a non-life threatening injury. Berger also had a non-life threatening injury. They were all in the same vehicle.

There was a candlelight vigil held at Burnsville High School Thursday night.

No other information has been released at this time.

Baseball Association 191 has set up a fund at Anchor Bank that will receive donation for Alyea’s family. Donations can be sent or dropped at any Anchor Bank and checks should be made payable to: The Family of Ty Alyea.
