Embattled Maple Grove City Council Member LeAnn Sargent returned to her seat for the first time since leaving the Hennepin County workhouse. Sargent served time for financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult. She was found guilty of taking more than $100,000 from her father while she cared for him before his death.

While Sargent pleaded guilty to a felony charge, she was then sentenced for a misdemeanor. Had Sargent been sentenced to a felony, she would have been ineligible to finish her term on the council.

On Monday night, residents spoke at the council's regular open forum, demanding Sargent resign. Sargent has refused to quit her position on the council, citing her completed sentence and state law that only allows the removal of a sitting city council member when convicted of a felony.

During Monday night's meeting, the Maple Grove City Council voted to call for Sargent's resignation.

Sargent says she intends to remain in her seat and finish her term, but residents say they will continue to call for her ouster.
