A 15-year-old kayaker drowned after officials say he apparently capsized and wasn’t able to get out of his kayak.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was called around 4:47 p.m. Sunday by a Montevideo woman who was staying at the WildRidge Campgrounds on Lobster Lake. She said her son, Brennon David Johnson, had been out kayaking since 12:30 p.m. and still hadn’t returned.
Deputies used a “Code Red” notification system in the Lobster Lake area, and multiple private boaters joined the search for Brennon.
Around 5:52 p.m., the teen and his kayak were found submerged on the northwest side of the lake. Deputies say Brennon was still in his life jacket and apparently couldn’t get out of the kayak. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Douglas County Medical Center said the cause of death was accidental drowning.
