Three people are in custody in connection to the shooting death of Mendota Heights Police Officer Scott Patrick, according to a police source.
St. Paul Police say they received a tip that Brian Fitch Sr. may be in the area of Rice Street and Sycamore Street in St. Paul. Officers responded to the area and spotted Fitch driving.
Authorities say Fitch recognized one of the unmarked squad cars and made a U-turn. One of the squad cars was able to pull in front of Fitch's car to stop him.
As an officer got out of his squad car, Fitch opened fire, according to St. Paul police. Officers fired back, shooting Fitch several times. Fitch is in the hospital and his condition is unknown.
Police say a woman was in the car with Fitch and was also shot. She is in custody and in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities have been searching for Fitch since the shooting happened around 12:20 p.m. They identified him as a suspect during a news conference Wednesday evening.
At this time, authorities say they are not looking for any additional suspects but say this is a fluid investigation.
The third person in custody has not been identified by police.
