Democrats Push Contraceptive Bill Ahead of Election

Created: 07/30/2014 2:30 PM KSTP.com

Minnesota House Democrats hope to pass a bill next session requiring that employers provide contraceptives to workers.

The legislation is intended to counteract the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in the Hobby Lobby case.

The high court ruled that companies with religious objections can avoid the contraceptives requirement in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul. Minnesota Democrats' legislation would require fully insured employer health plans cover contraceptives. Non-profit religious employers would be exempt.

A group of nearly 20 Democrats introduced the proposal at a press conference Wednesday, ahead of the November election and many months before the Legislature reconvenes.

House Majority Leader Erin Murphy says she thinks the issue will galvanize voters. Democrats are defending a 12-seat majority in the House.

In Congress, Senate Republicans blocked a similar proposal.
