A 34-year-old Mendota Heights man who was killed in northern Minnesota after allegedly assaulting a 72-year-old woman didn’t have a prior criminal record, according to authorities.

Benjamin Beaudoin had been in the area near International Falls for a friend’s wedding before he was fatally shot Saturday morning, according to Koochiching County authorities.

Authorities say the incident started when Beaudoin busted into a home on Highway 53 in Ray, Minnesota, around 5:20 a.m. The homeowner heard his wife scream, grabbed his shotgun and hit Beaudoin over the head.

Beaudoin left the home and went to a different house a few miles down the road.

When he knocked on the door, 72-year-old Ethal Himes answered. She let Beaudoin into the home after Beaudoin told her he had been assaulted. Once inside, Beaudoin allegedly grabbed her and threw her down to the floor.

Ethal’s son, 48-year-old Bradley Himes, came into the room and told Beaudoin to stop. When Beaudoin didn’t stop, Bradley grabbed a handgun from the bedroom. Himes told investigators Beaudoin followed him into the room and lunged at him. He then shot Beaudoin.

Beaudoin was taken to Rainy Lake Medical Center where he later died, authorities say.

The incident is still under investigation.
