5 EYEWITNESS NEWS has learned the long-time music director at Minneapolis South High School resigned just one week after a complaint was filed against him with Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS).

Scott Carter taught at South High for 21 years and, as director of the band and jazz ensemble, the school's music program won numerous awards and was recognized nationally. In 1998, it won the Twin Cities Jazz Ensemble of The Year.

In 2010 and 2011, the jazz ensemble played in New Orleans' French Quarter. Carter is still listed as director of the South High Community Band, which is made up of South High alumni and current students. We reached out to that group to find out what they might know about Carter's departure from the school, but they did not respond.

MPS issued a statement that says, in part, "On June 3, a complaint was made regarding Scott R. Carter. He was placed on administrative leave that same day and an investigation was begun immediately. Carter resigned June 10, while the investigation was underway. Minneapolis Public Schools takes seriously any allegation against a teacher."

MPS says it cannot comment any further because Carter resigned before the investigation was finished. If an MPS employee is not disciplined, the case is considered private under state law.

We tried contacting Carter to respond to our story, but we were unable to locate him.
