Police say a large swath of mayflies may have caused a three-vehicle crash on a Wisconsin road.

Highway 63 in Trenton Township had become slick from the mayflies Sunday evening, causing at least one of the drivers involved in the crash to lose control of her vehicle. They also said visibility was limited at the time of the crash.

Two people were injured in the crash, but only one person was taken to a local hospital.

Mayflies are taking over after the first hatch of the season Sunday night. The hatch was so large you could see it on weather radar maps.

The bugs are harmless and a sign of a healthy river because they can only reproduce in areas with high-quality water.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
