Exciting news for drivers in the Twin Cities' west metro.

A project that adds a third lane to Interstate 494 from the Fish Lake Interchange to Highway 55 begins Monday.

During the first phase of the project, motorists can expect nighttime and weekend lane closures. On Monday, crews will begin working near the County Road 47 and Schmidt Lake Road bridges in Plymouth.

The project wraps up in 2016.

Expect major traffic delays in St. Paul later in the week.

Starting early Thursday morning, the ramp from Interstate 94 westbound to Interstate 35E northbound is expected to close for an entire month. The ramp from Broadway Street to I-35E northbound is also expected to shut down.

In Hastings, lane restrictions begin at 6 a.m. Monday on Highway 61. The right northbound lane will close from 4th Street to the CP Railroad Bridge.

It is expected to last for three weeks for bridge rail repairs.
