An attorney for a former Minnesota Gophers quarterback accused in an assault wants medical records of the victim's brain injuries.
Philip Nelson is charged with first-degree assault as a result of a confrontation with former Minnesota State, Mankato, football player Isaac Kolstad in downtown Mankato May 11. Nelson is accused of kicking Kolstad in the head after Kolstad was punched during an argument.
The Free Press says Nelson's attorney, Jim Fleming, wants CT scans that were taken at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato. Fleming says he needs the scans to determine whether the punch and Kolstad's fall to the ground or the kick to the head caused the most brain damage. Another man, Trevor Shelley, is accused of punching Kolstad.
A motion hearing is scheduled for Monday.
