A good Samaritan was honored Wednesday for rescuing an 11-year-old boy from the St. Croix River over Memorial Day weekend.
According to Chisago County Sheriff Rick Duncan, Kenphenyeehu Hawj of St. Paul witnessed 11-year-old Calvin Yang fall into the river on the evening of Sunday, May 25, and jumped off a 30-foot cliff to save him.
Hawj said he heard cries for help before he risked his life jumping into the water. Fighting the current, he swam to the boy, grabbed him by the arm and brought him safely to shore.
Calvin’s uncle, 21-year-old Tou Hu Vang, also jumped into the water to rescue him but drowned in the process.
Hawj was honored by the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office with a citizen lifesaving award; the award ceremony took place at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
