MnDOT Expenses Add Up after Brutal Winter, Wet Summer

You probably don't want to hear it in mid-July, but the Minnesota Department of Transportation says it was a costly year dealing with one of the most brutal winters we've had in a long time.

This past winter, MnDOT spent $130 million on snow and ice removal; an average Minnesota winter usually costs $80 million.

The Minnesota Legislature approved $20 million to offset snow and ice removal and another $10 million to help patch potholes. Still, that leaves MnDOT with $20 million to try to make up.

"A lot of what maintenance does in the summer has to do with snow and ice, guardrail repair, sign repair and replacement, and striping on roadways," MnDOT's Kevin Gutknecht said. "We probably did a little less in the way of all of those to help make up the difference,"

Summer hasn't been all that smooth either; MnDOT is now working on damage assessments after flooding in June caused mudslides and took out roads.

"As soon as we get that done, we'll figure out how to plan for, process and pay for that," Gutknecht said.

Federal money is expected to help with flood-related expenses.
