A Fridley man has been charged with attempted murder Tuesday after he allegedly cut his girlfriend's throat and then tried to cut his own.
Fridley police officers were called to the 6300 block of Pierce Street Northeast on Saturday on a report of a domestic situation. When they arrived, they found a 23-year-old woman who had been seriously assaulted by her boyfriend, according to police.
The suspect was identified as 22-year-old James Mitchell Bruins-Ahlers of Fridley.
The victim told investigators she was engaged to Bruins-Ahlers and lives with him. He became upset because he thought she was romantically involved with someone else, she stated.
According to the criminal complaint, Bruins-Ahlers beat her and dragged her by her hair. Bruins-Ahlers then tried to cut her throat with a kitchen knife; she grabbed the knife and tried to push it away, the complaint said.
When Fridley police responded, Bruins-Ahlers began to cut his own throat and had to be subdued by officers, the complaint said. He was taken to Mercy Hospital.
His girlfriend was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with knife wounds, including a cut across her throat. Doctors told investigators she received stitches on her windpipe.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 18.
