A 79-year-old Roseville man died after he was hit by a car early Monday morning, according to police.
The man, who has been identified as Charles R. Betts, was hit at 5:10 a.m. while crossing Snelling Avenue at County Road B in Roseville.
An off-duty Roseville police officer was heading to work when he came across the scene. The officer, along with bystanders, provided medical aid until Betts was transported by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, where he later died.
The driver, identified as a 39-year-old St. Paul man, has been cooperating with police. He was not injured.
There was no indication that speed or driver impairment contributed to the crash, police said. The driver was questioned and released and his vehicle was towed to police storage for inspection, which is common protocol during investigations.
Witnesses told investigators traffic was heading south on Snelling Avenue around 45 miles per hour. The cars had a green light when a pedestrian suddenly ran from east to west across the intersection and was hit.
Roseville police continue to investigate.
