A man has been arrested after police say he assaulted his girlfriend and then attempted to cut his own throat.

Fridley police officers were called to the 6300 block of Pierce Street Northeast on Saturday on a report of a domestic situation. When they arrived, they found a 23-year-old woman who had been seriously assaulted by her boyfriend, according to police.

The suspect was identified as 22-year-old James Mitchell Ahlers of Fridley.

Police say the victim had been beaten and dragged by her hair. She was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with knife wounds to her throat. Her injuries have been described as non-life threatening.

When Fridley police responded, Ahlers allegedly began to cut his own throat and had to be subdued by officers. He was taken to Mercy Hospital.

Ahlers was arrested but has not been formally charged.
