The largest career fair in the state for military veterans took place in Brooklyn Center on Wednesday.

About 160 employers were looking to fill job openings during the 2014 Minnesota Veterans Career Fair. The fair is open to all current and former members of the U.S. military and is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development along with the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans were able to learn about current job openings, get information about educational training, and listen to workshops on job hunting techniques. The job openings ranged from technology-related fields to construction, with many candidates getting interviewed on the spot.

For the first time, those who need the proper wardrobe can visit the "Suits for Soldiers" booth for a free suit to use at any interviews down the road. The suits are given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

"This is the second suit I tried on, and it fits almost perfectly," Army Veteran Standton Seitz said. "I don't have a suit, so this is an excellent deal for me."

Gov. Mark Dayton spoke at the beginning of the fair, saying veterans have unique skills employers can benefit from that cannot be taught elsewhere.

"They're superbly well-trained, way beyond whatever shows up on resumes," he said.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate for veterans is more than 10 percent; there are currently 380,000 veterans living in Minnesota.

The career fair ran from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Earle Brown Heritage Center.
