The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after human remains were found in a swampy area of Onamia, Minnesota.

Deputies found the remains around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Lake Shore Boulevard and North Cedar Street. They were discovered as part of a missing person investigation.

Police say 52-year-old Loren Anderson of Onamia was last seen the evening of April 15 near Lake Shore Boulevard and North Cedar Street, and he was officially reported missing by his sister on June 12.

The sheriff’s office executed a search warrant at Anderson’s home on July 2 in connection to the investigation; they say the remains were found a few hundred yards from where Anderson lived and was last seen.

The sheriff said they have no reason to believe that the remains are anyone other than those of Anderson, but per standard procedure the remains have been sent to the Anoka County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy and identification.

The Onamia Police Department, Mille Lacs Tribal Police Department and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension were all involved with the investigation.
