Relatives say a husband and father of nine kids was shot to death while breaking up a fight in Minneapolis one week ago Monday.
The shooting happened near 33rd and Penn Avenues North and killed 37-year-old Steven Martin. Two people are in custody, but police say the shooter is still at large.
Now, the family is grappling with the incredible loss.
"We have nine kids, and there's so many different emotions because of the age groups," Martin's wife, Nikki Martin, said. "I'm trying to to hold it together because we're all grieving, and I have to be strong for all of them."
It's the first time in years Nikki Martin will not spend the Fourth of July with her husband.
"Fourth of July isn't going to be the Fourth of July this year," Nikki Martin said. "He's always on the grill on the Fourth of July."
A memorial now marks the spot where Steven Martin was shot. His cousin, Everett Spicer, says Steven Martin lost his life while trying to be the peace maker and break up a fight.
"That's a good man," Spicer said. "He worked, had a family, all of that."
Nikki Martin says both she and Steven worked, so besides losing her partner, she has also lost his income.
"You got to remember there's nine kids and no life insurance," she said.
Two funds have been set up for the kids. One fund was set up at BMO Bank and another fund at GoFundMe.com.
Nikki Martin says they always thought their love was eternal.
"This is 'till death due us part,'" she said. "It was just a saying, and now it's happening."
