A 52-year-old Woodbury man pulled a trapped driver out of a burning car Sunday evening in New Brighton, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Robert Renning was driving southbound on Interstate 35W near County Road D around 6:30 p.m. Renning passed a car also driving on the interstate and saw it was on fire.
He flagged down Michael Johannes, the driver.
Johannes pulled over, and his vehicle quickly became fully engulfed in smoke. The electronic locks and windows failed. Johannes tried to kick out the windows to free himself but couldn't.
Renning ran to the car and, with his bare hands, bent the locked door in half. The window glass shattered and Renning was able to pull Johannes out to safety, the State Patrol says.
Johannes suffered minor smoke inhalation and a few cuts, and Renning wasn't hurt.
