A Minnesota Department of Transportation employee is in critical condition Monday afternoon after he and a co-worker were hit in a work zone on Interstate 35W near Burnsville.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. Sunday just north of Cliff Road.

The two workers were placing traffic cones to mark lane closures on northbound I-35W when a car hit the MnDOT truck around 4 p.m, officials say. The lane closure was necessary to give workers room to build a dike to prevent the road from flooding.

Ronald McDeid of Champlain was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with serious injuries. The 43-year-old was in critical condition at HCMC Monday afternoon.

Fifty-seven-year-old Dennis Scott of Rockford suffered non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash, according to the state patrol. He was taken to Fairview Southdale Hospital on Sunday. His current condition is unknown.

The driver of the vehicle involved had no apparent injuries, according to the state patrol.
